Department of Vascular Surgery

History

       The Department of Vascular Surgery started functioning with 10 beds as a speciality wing attached to the I Surgical Unit of the Department of Surgery, Madurai Medical College and Government Rajaji Hospital from the year 1972.

       In 1993, it became a separate unit headed by Flt.Lt.Dr.J.Rajappa as the Head of the Department.
Dr.N.Durairaj,Dr.T.Vidyasagaran,Dr.N.Rajagopalan and Dr.Thulasikumar were the successive Professors, contributing to the development and upliftment of the department's services to the needy.

      Professor Dr.S.Jeyakumar,MS,DNB,MCh,FRCS(Edinburgh) assumed charge as the Head of the Department from December 2011 and is ably assisted by One Assistant Professor.


Services of the department

Outpatients services are provided OP NO 16, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10AM to 12Noon.
In all other days Surgeries are performed.
3days are allotted for Major Surgeries.
2days are allotted for Minor Surgeries.

Teaching Programme

The department conducts regular teaching programme for the
Undergraduate MBBS students,
Surgery Post-graduate students and
B.Sc Nursing students.

Surgeries Performed include,
Open Surgeries:
  • All Vascular Surgeries including Thoraco Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair,
  • Endovascular stenting/ballooning,
  • Cathether directed thrombolysis etc.,

In the year 2002, the all India Conference of the Vascular Society of India was conducted by the department of vascular surgery, Madurai Medical College at Kodaikanal.
