Department of Surgical Oncology
            The Surgical Oncology department offers comprehensive surgical care in the management of cancer patients. Surgery has been traditionally the mainstay in solid cancer management and it still remains so. Surgical oncologists are specialists who have undergone 3 years post MS rigorous training in the surgical management of cancers, incorporating the multimodal approach when necessary, to give the best chance for cure.
History :
            Dr.B.K.C.Mohan Prasad joined Government Rajaji Hospital as the first qualified surgical oncologist in 1987.He started the cancer OP and introduced specialized cancer surgery to the unit he was attached as well as to other surgeons. In 1998, the surgical oncology department was established for the first time in the whole state in a Government Hospital. The department had separate OP days & OT days exclusively for cancer patients. It is now a full fledged department for the past 14 years with one Professor and Two Assistant Professors.
            The surgical oncology department has
             one cancer ward,      
             one breast cancer ward
             a postoperative ward.
            It has a sanctioned bed strength of 35.
Outpatient (OP) clinics
            Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10AM to 12 noon.
            Operation days are Mondays & Saturdays.

                 Head and neck cancers including thyroid cancers
                 Gastrointestinal cancers
                 Genitourinary cancers
                 Soft tissue sarcomas
                 Skin cancers
                  Bone cancers
Exclusive surgeries:
The following surgeries are done exclusively in our department on par with any renowned cancer centre in the country.
            Limb salvage surgery for sarcomas of extremities
            Composite resection with reconstruction for advanced oral cancers
            Widefield laryngectomy for advanced laryngeal cancers
            Laryngopharyngoesophagectomy for postcricoid growth
            Various neck dissections
            Pelvic Exenteration for locally advanced pelvic malignancies
            Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for carcinoma rectum
            Retroperitoneal lymphnode dissection(RPLND)
            Wertheim’s hysterectomy
            Staging laparotomy for ovarian cancers
            Radical vulvectomy with inguinofemoral block dissection
            Emasculation with ilioinguinal block dissection for carcinoma penis
            Our expertise in thyroid cancers is well brought out by the low Recurrent
            Laryngeal Nerve (RLN)  injury rate comparable to the best in the country.
Other activities:
            MS & MD(OG) students are posted regularly to our department.
                      They are taught about the principles and practice of surgical oncology with regular programmes in                                 assisting surgeries.
             B.Sc  nursing students are posted in our wards to learn about oncological nursing.
                       Theory classes are also taken for nursing students both diploma & degree .
IEC activities:

        CME programmes are regularly conducted.
     Pink October was observed last year for breast cancer awareness in association with medical oncology Free  mammogram was offered to hospital staff as part of  the programme.

        Prof.B.K.C.Mohanprasad medal exam in surgical oncology has been instituted for final year MS (gen) postgraduates and carries a medal & citation.
            Madurai has been chosen as Regional Cancer Centre and the surgical oncology department is set to expand further with the addition of one Associate professor and two assistant professors.
