History

The Department of STD has been functioning at Government Rajaji Hospital since the inception of Madurai Medical College in 1954. Dr.Rama Iyengar was the founder of this department  which was subsequently headed by Dr.P.S.Renganathan,Dr.K.Jeyapaul, Dr.A.Shanmugasundararaj, Dr.M.K.Venkatram,Dr.HemaDevarajan, Dr.SarawathySarojini, Dr.R.Ganesh, Dr.N.Nagarajan, Dr.S.Vasuki, The department was upgraded into a full-fledged postgraduate department in 1978 by Dr.P.S.Renganathan, the renowned venereologist whose research work on neurosyphilis was appreciated worldwide for being the 1st perhaps the only institution in India to demonstrate live Treponema Pallidum in the living human brain. The department played an important role in establishment of HIV Care & follow up in the early HIV era when ART was not available. This department was the 1st institution in India to report the existence of HIV 2 in our population which resulted in the change of testing strategy from HIV1 to HIV1&2.

Present status of the Department

At present the department is headed by Dr.Dr.D.Amalraja M.D.,D.V. Daily OP is conducted from 8 AM to 12 PM (Monday to Saturday including Govt. Holidays), deserving patients are admitted in the wards. Spouse/ contact referral is achieved through ‘contact slips’. All high risk cases are screened for HIV after counseling. Initial evaluation & OI care of HIV sero-positives are done in our department. We are responsible for Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) programme in the Govt.Rajaji Hospital. This department, is not only catering to Madurai city but also a tertiary care center for the neighboring districts, and now well on its way to become a ‘state referral center’ soon.
