The department of Plastic Surgery of the Govt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai came into existence on the 26th of January 1964 with Professor Sam C. Bose as its pilot. Fourty eight  glorious years have passed by since its inauguration.  In all these years the Department has registered a steady progress in all branches of its field.  The proud and prestigious torch bearers behind the success and growth of this department are Prof.Sam C. Bose, Prof.N.Mahendran, Prof.C.Gopalakrishnan, Prof.James Pandian, Prof.V.Narayanan, Prof.V.Devasenan,  Prof.N.Sekar and Prof.C.Balasubramanian in that order.
 
        
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
Type of course :              M.Ch. Plastic Surgery

Duration of the course is 3 years

Two Candidates are selected every year for M.Ch.  Training Programme by the Directorate of Medical Education, Chennai.
The course is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University
 
The candidates are selected by a competitive entrance examination conducted by Selection committee, DME, TN.
Exams are being conducted for the candidates at the end of 2 years – Basics in plastic surgery & at the end of 3 years – Regional plastic, Recent advances & Applied plastic surgery followed by clinical exams.
 
Periodic  activities in the department

  1. In our department we conduct various regular academic activities for both M.Ch and M.S Post Graduates.

  2. Regular discussion on the topics which will help in theory exams for M.Ch Post Graduates are conducted from 12.00 Noon to 1.30 P.M. on Tuesday & Thursdays.

  3. Surgical review of all the cases done in that week, Elective surgeries, Emergency Hand, Faciomaxillary surgeries is held on Tuesdays and cases operated in Guest  OTs is held on Thursdays.

  4. Discussion on topics are conducted by the faculty for M.S. Post Graduates on Tuesdays & Thursdays

  5. Planning session & Journal club is conducted on Saturdays  between 11.30-1.30 P.M. with full –Participation.

  6. Discussion on the clinical cases are held regularly at the outpatient hours by H.O.D on Tuesdays & Thursday s between 10 – 12 Noon.

  7. Cadaveric dissections are done regularly on Tuesdays between 2.30 – 3.30 Pm for M.Ch Post Garduates guided by Asst. Professors.

  8. Microvascular training has been conducted on Tuesdays between 2.30 – 3.30 PM for M.Ch Post Graduates guided by Asst. Professors.

  9.  Detailed discussion on the operated procedures and management of cases are held during rounds on Tuesdays, Thursdays and grand rounds on Saturdays.

10. Regular papers are presented by M.Ch Post   Graduates at Surgical Society meet, clinical Society meet, state & National conferences.                   
 
 
ACHIEVEMENTS

  • In June, 1964 Dr. Don Marshal from Melbourne, Australia visited the Unit and performed Tendon surgeries in hand.

  • In September, 1964 Dr. Harold C. McComb came to our unit along with Dr. Terry Bourke, Anaesthesiologist and Dr. Ted Adler, Dental surgeon.  They stayed for 3 weeks and performed various surgeries.

  • Notable visitors to our unit from India are Prof. C. Balakrishnan, Prof. N.H. Antia, Prof. R.N. Sinha and others.

  • Cosmetic surgery workshop was conducted in the year 1998.

  • The first TANPAPAS meeting was held at Kodaikanal by Prof. James Pandian as President and Dr. R. M. Raja Muthaiah as Secretary and Dr. C. Balasubramanian as treasurer in the year 2002.

  • In 2011  10th TANPAPS was again conducted by Madurai Plastic surgery department in Kodaikanal by Prof.C.Balasubramanian as president, Dr.R.M.RajaMuthaiah as secretary & Prof.G.Veerasekar as treasurer. 

  • Prof. Sam C Bose oration is conducted once every year during April.

  • Madurai City Chapter Plastic Surgeons Association meeting is conducted once every month.  Speakers are invited for guest lectures on various topics.  Also, discussions on diagnosis, procedures, treatment and case studies are held.

  • Dr. G. Balaji M.S., M.Ch., who appeared for M.Ch University examination March 2002 from our Department has won two prestigious Gold Medals – Prof. Mathangai  Ramakrishnan Endowment Prize & Prof. C. R. Sundarajan Gold Medal – from the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University,  Chennai.

  • Dr. Sathish has received Best Paper Award & Gold Medal for his presentation on “Ear lobule reconstruction with Double Crossed Skin Flaps” at TANPAPS 2009 held  in Erode.
