DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY
Short History of the Department
Paediatric Surgery department is one of the oldest departments in Madurai Medical College. The department of Paediatric Surgery, Madurai Medical College, was born in 1962, started by a doyen Paediatric Surgeon professor Dr. T. Dorairajan, a dynamic personality . Apart from orthopedic surgery and ENT surgery , Paediatric surgery was the first higher specialty to function in Erskine Hospital, preceding neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery .
The department has been in service to the society since then and has saved the lives of a countless number of children with congenital anomalies, victims of major life-endangering accidents, burns etc. and also changed the life of so many children who would have otherwise died of solid cancers like Wilms tumor, Neuroblastoma, Teratoma etc.
The department has grown in man power since then. It has given birth to so many eminent Paediatric Surgeons around the country and abroad and is the GURUKUL of so many budding Paediatric Surgeons.
The department is the referral centre for the whole of south Tamil Nadu. Around 18000 children are treated per year in the Dept. of Paediatric Surgery. Every year around 1200 neonates undergo major surgery for congenital anomalies like tracheo-esophageal fistula, diaphragmatic hernia and small bowel atresia. The Department of Paediatric Surgery, Madurai Medical College, Madurai serves the entire population of Southern Tamil Nadu. All critically ill neonates with obstruction, peritonitis or TEF, Diaphragmatic Hernia and Ano Rectal agenesis from all over South Tamil Nadu are referred only to this dept.
In the academic year 1967 , the M.Ch. degree in Paediatric surgery was started after the Medical council, the Madurai University and the D.M.E gave their permission. After Madras, Madurai was the second center in India to start the course. Every year two postgraduate students are trained. About 75 Paediatric Surgeons were trained in this institution and they are practising all over India.
