History of the Department
 
    Ophthalmology department was started in year 1925. The department was upgraded to a teaching department in August 1956.
 
    Dr.G.Venkatasamy M.S.D.O., was appointed as lecturer with one tutor in ophthalmology. The department has grown rapidly and now we have patients from all parts of south Tamilnadu. We have 150 under graduate students, 12 diploma in ophthalmology and 6 M.S. ophthalmology students per year.
 
    The ophthalmic department has separate block for outpatient department in the government Rajaji hospital which is very near the main road. We have separate pre and post-operative ward in Kannappanayanar block with 110 bed strength.
 
Present status of the department
 
    Presently we have various special clinics i.e. Cornea, Glaucoma, Neuro-ophthalmology, Retina, Orbit and Oculoplasty and Uvea clinic. We have one mobile ophthalmic unit which conducts screening eye camps in the rural areas in Madurai district with para medical ophthalmic assistants.

    We have one pilot project for school children vision screening programme in our department, we do refraction and prescribe glasses for the children who has refractive errors.

    We are attending eye donation calls and doing Enucleation regularly. Approximately we are collecting 20 eye balls under hospital corneal retrieval programme every month. 
 
    We do diabetic retinopathy screening in rural areas also as outreach programme.
 
    With all the field works in the rural and academic works in the department, teaching for under graduates, post graduates and nursing students and also giving small incision cataract surgery training for ophthalmologist from other districts,  and training the paramedical workers. We try to reduce the ocular morbidity and promote ocular health and there by achieve vision 2020 for all.
