DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY
The Department of Medical Gastroenterology for Govt. Rajaji Hospital, Madurai was sanctioned by the Govt. of Tamilnadu in G.O. Ms. No.441 dated. 13/31984, following which, by Hospital order (H.O. no 01/84, GRH, Madurai dated 15/05/1984) the outpatient wing of this department started functioning from 16/05/1984 in OP number 24.
It functions between 10 AM to 12 noon, daily except on Sundays. Inpatient services were soon started in ward 303, with total bed strength of 16 for Men & Women.

The Department has a post of Reader (Now Prof. &HOD) & an Asst. Professor. Post Graduate students doing M.D (Gen. Med) are posted to the Department for a period of 1 month on a rotation basis round the year.

Investigational services like Diagnostic Endoscopy, Colonoscopy are done daily since the inception of department.
The Department routinely manages therapeutic endoscopy like Endoscopic Variceal Band Ligation, Sclerotherapy, Polypectomy, Foreign Body removal, Pneumatic dilatation for Achalasia, Dilatation and stenting for malignancy Etc. The statistics of the department are given below.

The Professor and the Assistant Professor of the department are not only engaged in patient care and teaching but also involved in academic activities like case presentations, Seminars, paper presentations in State, National and International conferences. A presentation on Transabdominal peritoneoscopy won the best Paper award in the Indian Society of gastroenterology National Conference in 2005.
Another paper on Renal resistive Index in Portal Hypertension got the Best paper Award in the state Conference in 2010.
The department of Medical Gastroenterology has organized a live therapeutic endoscopy workshop for the first time in Madurai in 2004, which was attended by more than 300 delegates.
In 2010 , The department organized a CME on Hepatitis B, which had National faculty from AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh which was good teaching session.
As part of public awareness, the Department of Medical Gastroenterology has organized Hepatitis Awareness rally in 2008, which was flagged off by the Commissioner of Police.
In 2012, A mega screening camp of Hepatitis B and C amongst Health care workers was organized and 1650 people were screened as part of World Hepatitis Day celebrations.

This screening camp was greatly appreciated by the WHO and had found mention in the WHO technical report as given below. Hepatitis screening was also done for tribal people in Sirumalai hills and IMA members and families at Dindigul.

As part of therapeutic endoscopy, a highly technically demanding procedure called ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) being done routinely for the poor patients attending the Hospital from 2009. The statistics of the procedure is given below.

In 2012, May the Professor of Medical Gastroenterology was given the Best Teacher Award by the Dr.MGR Medical University. The professor received the Award from the MCI Governing Council Member Dr.Singh.

The department of Medical Gastroenterology is staffed by a professor and an assistant professor along with a social worker. It caters to patient care, teaching and Research for PG Students.
