History of library :
Madurai Medical College is probably second to Chennai Medical College, Chennai offering a number of Undergraduate and Post graduate courses in various specialities. It has been grown rapidly during the past 20 years. The Central Library in this institution rendering services to undergraduate and postgraduates. The library follows open access system. There is a separate study hall for under graduates, Air conditioned study hall for postgraduates and a separate air-conditioned study hall for professors/ Faculties. Library is blessed with several crores worth reading materials, which are meant not only for present student community but also for future generation. The library is under the control of library committee nominated by the Dean, from the teaching staff of the college and the Dean is the President of Library Committee.
Present Status of the Library :
About 40000 books are available at various specialities more 25 international journals and 40 national journals are purchased every year.
Working hours of the library is from 8.30 am to 8.30pm on all working days and 8.30am to 1.30 pm on all Sundays and 2nd Saturdays .
Xerox facility provided to the students at nominal rate. Browsing Centre in the Library function from 10 A.M to 6 P.M an all working days to fullfill the need of the teaching & Non teaching faculty and students at nominal rate.

The National Medical Library has granted 10 computers to the worth of Rs.3.50 lakhs is to be used for the government Medical College libraries with National Medical Library , New Delhi. There is a separate A/C hall for the Networking facility used by the students and staff. The Library providing access to the widest possible spectrum of information resources such as e-journals , e-books, online data-base, print & non print materials relevant to the need of academic will surely attract the students & faculty . We created an atmosphere for both the students & faculty for learning.

SC/ST Book Bank
The scheduled caste / scheduled tribe book bank scheme which was started in 1978-80 with the allottment of Rs.62,000 is now functioning in the library with books to the approximate value of Rs.15 to 20 lakhs . Adi-dravidar & Tribal Welfare Education - Centrally sponsored Scheme of book for Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe students who have received Govt . of India post-matric Scholarship benefited in the scheme.
