 HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY

The Department of Dermatology has been functioning at Government Rajaji Hospital since the inception of Madurai Medical College in 1954. Dr.G.A.Naidu was the first person to chair the department which was taken over later by Dr.T.V.Venkatesan, Dr.Muthukumarasamy, Dr.Thonthiraj, Dr Rangarajan, Dr.A.Kotteeswaran, DR.Uma Selvam , Dr.H.Syed Maaroof, Dr.S.Krishnan subsequently and is  currently being chaired by Dr.A.S.Krishnaram. The Department of Dermatology has undergone a gradual transformation from being just an outpatient department initially to a speciality department with Postgraduate training in DNB since 1998 and DDVL and MD (DVL) which was started after approval by MCI in 2004. Around 30 postgraduates have successfully completed the courses so far and are serving nationwide at present. The treatment modalities have progressed from topical medications to dermatological surgeries including lasers.

This department is a tertiary care centre for all the districts surrounding Madurai. It is equipped with modern infrastructure and staffed by some of the most renowned dermatologists in the community to cater to the needs of the patients. The outpatient department sees an average of 350 patients a day with the average inpatient census being 20. We are in the process of improving the infrastructure further to improve the quality of services being rendered.
